Sleeping Through the Night – II
November 20, 2002 – 3:52 pmApparently Liam was just giving us a taste of the good life last week. He slept well Sunday – Tuesday, but since then has been a completely different story. Every night he has awakened in the middle of the night around 1:30 or 2:00, often more than once. I have the reason narrowed down to just a few possibilities.
- He’s going through a growth spurt and he needs more food more often
- He’s extorting us. Those few days were just to give us a taste and now he wants something or he’s never going to sleep through the night again. Trouble is, he can’t talk yet to tell us his demands, so he just cries.
- He’s not warm enough at night. He wakes up cold – that makes me cry too when it happens to me. When he gets pulled into bed with us, he seems to sleep fine.
- He’s figured out that crying will get him moved to the big bed
Whatever the reason, none of us is sleeping through the night anymore.

I’m sorry Aaron. Payback isn’t much fun is it? You were 2 years old before you slept through the night! Actually, I don’t remember but I do know it was none too soon. And, you cried—alot. And see, you don’t cry much now. Liam will get over it too. And he’s so darn cute.

Well after a few kids myself — I would say you hit the nail on the head with guess #4. They start early, and before you know it — everyone is in one bed.

Aaron, my son was the same way, too. He started the same thing, too, at about 6 months. He gave us alittle bit of the good life, went back to crying more during the night, and then went to a stage of crying around 1 a.m. and then maybe around 3 a.m. To me that was a blessing, almost like clockwork. You knew it was going to happen. After awhile he stretched those two awakenings farther apart to where a lot of the nights he didn’t wake up. Now it’s wake up time to goto the bathroom and having bad dreams. Oh, and getting leg cramps or growing pains! It’s not bad anymore.
