Just catching up
September 30, 2002 – 4:40 pmJust a few things that caught my attention lately:
Saw a guy driving a mini-van while I was waiting for the train on Friday. He was turning right, his light was red and he drove partly into the crosswalk, forcing a pedestrian to go around him. He backed up, rolled down his window and I saw him say “Sorry ’bout that.” Restores my faith in humanity a bit. There are still some conscientious drivers out there.
In the shower this morning, it ocurred to me, and not for the first time, how difficult it is for me to wake up and be in a good mood if I don’t get my morning shower. That led me to wonder how I would have functioned in times past when a daily shower was not an option. That in turn led me to wonder how many other people are the same way, or posiibly even more so. I wondered if murderers and abusers and other violent criminals perpetrated their crimes on days when they had had a nice hot refreshing shower. I wondered if any research had been done on any correlation between cleanliness and criminality. Maybe I should apply for a research grant.
Let’s see, I know there was at least one other thing I wanted to tell you about…
Started getting errors during boot up that my primary hard drive, a 60gig Maxtor, was experiencing problems and failure was iminent, that I should back up all my data. I downloaded Maxtor’s Powermax utility that ran some tests, allegedly fixed them and then certified my drive as error free. I still get the error at boot up, though, so I ran out and bought a Western Digital 80gig drive that was on sale at CompUSA, just in case. I’ve had the feeling for a while now that something was wrong with my computer. It seems to run well, it just gives me fits at boot up. Hangs in the middle of boot up a lot. I suspected either the power supply or the motherboard, but now I’m wondering if it’s been that hard drive all along. Hmmm
